False lashes can feel intimidating the first time. But once you get the technique down, it takes under 5 minutes. Here's exactly how to do it — no salon, no experience needed.
What You'll Need
- Your false lashes
- Lash glue (sold separately)
- Tweezers or a lash applicator
- A mirror with good lighting
Step 1 — Measure and Trim First
Before applying any glue, hold the lash up against your eye. A false lash should start just after your inner corner — not right at the edge. If it's too wide, trim from the outer edge, never the inner. This is the step most beginners skip, and it's why lashes feel uncomfortable or lift up at the corners.
Step 2 — Apply Glue and Wait
Squeeze a thin, even line of lash glue along the band. Then set it down and wait 30 to 45 seconds. The glue needs to become tacky before you apply. This is the most common beginner mistake — pressing the lash on while the glue is still wet makes it slide around and never stick properly.
Step 3 — Place from the Centre
Starting from the centre of your lash line, press the lash down as close to your natural lashes as possible. Then press the inner corner, then the outer. Hold each section down for about 10 seconds. Don't rush this part.
Step 4 — Blend and Finish
Once the lash is secure, run a thin line of black eyeliner along the band to hide it. Then gently press your natural lashes and the false ones together at the tips so they blend into one. A coat of mascara on your natural lashes before applying the false pair also helps everything look seamless.
Which Lash Should a Beginner Start With?
Not all lashes are created equal when you're just starting out. Heavy, dramatic lashes are harder to apply and less forgiving. The best starting points are lashes with thin, flexible bands that sit naturally on the eye.
At The Glam Shelf, two styles are specifically designed for first-time wearers:
- CLEAN GIRL Natural Lashes — ultra-lightweight, barely-there finish. The closest thing to wearing nothing at all.
- GS3 Half Lash Tray — half lashes that sit only on the outer corner. Easier to apply than a full strip, and incredibly natural-looking.
Both are cruelty-free, reusable up to 5–7 times, and designed to make the learning curve as easy as possible.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying glue when it's still wet — always wait for it to get tacky
- Not trimming the lash to fit your eye width
- Placing the lash too far into the inner corner — it will lift and irritate
- Using too much glue — a thin line is enough
- Pressing down only once — hold each section for at least 10 seconds
How to Remove False Lashes Without Damaging Them
Gently peel from the outer corner inward — never pull from the centre. Once removed, peel any leftover glue off the band before storing. Keep them in the original tray to hold their shape. With proper care, a good pair of lashes is reusable 5 to 7 times.
False lashes are a skill. The first time might not be perfect — and that's completely fine. By the third or fourth try, it'll feel like second nature.
